1. What is Aquamid®?
Aquamid® is a soft volume filler which integrates naturally with the body’s own tissue. It is a biocompatible, non-allergenic and non-absorbable hydrogel consisting of 97.5% water and 2.5% cross-linked polyacrylamide.
The Aquamid® hydrogel is homogeneous and does not contain microparticles. Therefore, Aquamid® does not cause tissue hardening or granulomas.
Aquamid® allows the exchange of fluids with surrounding cells resembling normal tissue behaviour. It maintains its shape and does not migrate from the injection site. The hydrogel becomes totally integrated with the tissue. It follows the movements of the tissue and hence cannot be distinguished from tissue by touch and feel.
Aquamid® is uniquely suited to replace lost tissue volume due to aging, or add extra volume where needed, to achieve nicer facial contours. It gives a beautiful natural look and feel.
2. How is Aquamid® different from other fillers?
With hyaluronic acid and collagen fillers, wrinkle correction usually lasts for 3 months up to 12 months. Since Aquamid® does not get absorbed in the body, the results last for many years without need for re-treatments.
Fillers providing results lasting more than 12 months are typically composed of small particles suspended in a carrier gel. Particles act as a tissue irritant, achieving the volume effect by chronic inflammation. This bears a risk of tissue hardening and firm nodule formation. With particle fillers relying on the foreign body response full aesthetic effect is obtained months after the injection and often is not predictable.
Aquamid® is totally homogeneous (no particles). It a “volume” filler as opposed to the “structural” fillers where the aesthetic result is obtained by intense foreign body reaction to the tissue irritant-microparticles. Hence Aquamid® does not cause tissue hardening and firm nodule-granuloma formation.
3. What does Aquamid® treatment entail?
Aquamid is injected into the tissue layer right below the skin through a thin (27G), sterile needle. There is no need for allergy tests. Typically, the doctor uses a local anesthetic. The treatment normally takes about 30 minutes. The patient gets back to normal activities soon after the treatment.
4. How soon do results appear?
Results are immediate, predictable and natural looking. Since Aquamid® is homogenous and does not contain any particles, its filling effect relies exclusively on the added volume from the hydrogel itself. Thus the full effect is obtained immediately.
5. How long do results last?
Clinical studies with Aquamid have shown that the patients are satisfied with the aesthetic results many years efter the injection without retreatment. A clinical study conducted in six European countries show patient satisfaction levels above 90% after five years.
Continuous loss of facial tissue fat is part of the natural aging process. Therefore, it could be necessary to inject additional Aquamid years after the initial treatment. The actual durability of the treatment depends on the aging process of the individual patient. Since Aquamid gets completely integrated with the tissue and moves undisturbed with the skin, the look stays totally natural.
6. Are there any potential side effects or complications?
As with all filler injections, there is a small risk of mild irritation, redness, tenderness or transient swelling at the injection site. Typically such reactions resolve within a couple of days.
In rare cases an infection can occur. The symptoms could be a tingling sensation in the treated area. If an infection is suspected, the injecting doctor should be contacted. The recommended treatment is with broad-spectra antibiotics (steroids or NSAIDs should never be used as those may seriously aggravate the condition by suppressing the body’s own defense mechanisms).
7. Can Aquamid® be used with other types of injectable implants?
Aquamid® should NOT be used in a site where ANY non-resorbable filler has previously been injected.
In sites previously treated with a resorbable filler, Aquamid® should not be injected until the resorbable filler has been absorbed (minimum 6 months after).
8. What is the difference between Aquamid® and other products containing polyacrylamide?
“Polyacrylamide” is a name for a large group of substances having the same basic synthesis materials but being different in characteristics. Polyacrylamides can vary substantially in their properties and hence are not identical. Aquamid® is manufactured in Denmark based on patented cross-linking technology. Contura has worked extensively on developing the molecular structure to manufacture the gel tailored especially for soft tissue augmentation. Aquamid® contains the highest water content – 97.5% – and less dry matter – 2.5% – than any other polyacrylamide hydrogel.
This means that Aquamid®:
– Is highly biocompatible
– Allows maximum water exchange with tissue promoting full integration in the body
– Can be injected with a very thin needle (27G) which minimizes the pain and discomfort
9. What is the period of time between two injections?
New injections can be performed after at least 2 weeks (swelling from the last injection must completely subside). There is no maximum interval
10. How soon can I have other aesthetic procedures (e.g. laser treatment) following Aquamid® treatment?
You should avoid laser, peeling, skin resurfacing, pigmentation or aesthetic treatments in the area injected for at least 6 months before and after Aquamid® injection.
11. What happens if I want to get a face-lift in 5 years?
Aquamid resembles bodies own tissue and therefore follows the natural tissue if stretched. It does not prohibit any remodeling your plastic surgeon may suggest.
12. Can Aquamid be removed?
Initially the gel can be removed easily by aspiration through a minute puncture/incision. Over time Aquamid becomes integrated within the tissue and hence requires procedure similar to liposuction. The hydrogel cannot be removed completely by any of the procedures, however the aesthetic experience can be altered if desired.
13. Is the safety of Aquamid® documented?
More than 10 clinical studies have been conducted with Aquamid in Europe, Australia, Asia, and Latin America. Many have been published in leading medical journals.
To date more than 575,000 injections have been performed world wide.
14. Where is Aquamid® made?
Aquamid® is manufactured in Denmark in compliance with the European Medical Devices Directive.
